Hip fractures are one of the most common problems faced by the elderly and can have serious consequences. In most cases they are the result of a simple fall - typically on wet surfaces or as a result of failing eyesight or poor balance.
Hipshield has been designed to offer greater protection to those at risk by placing a shock-absorbing material at the most vulnerable points on the hip bone. The system is simple, easy to use and cost effective.
How does it work?
Hip shield is designed to prevent a fall becoming an injury. It absorbs and deflects the impact away from the hip bone as contact is made with the surface. The technology was originally developed as a protection for those involved in motor bike accidents where joints and bones were at greatest risk from impact damage.
Inside the protector is a lightweight honeycomb structure made up of air-filled cells. On impact the cells compress like a series of mini shock absorbers, spreading and absorbing the impact energy.
The protector is worn with special protector pants (INCLUDED WHEN PURCHASED FROM Glebe Healthcare!) which are available in male or female styles in a range of sizes. They contain internal pockets on either hip where the protectors are held to keep them in place over the prominent hip bone edges.
