Biotin is a water-soluble B-complex vitamin that is produced in the intestines by bacteria as well as being provided by the diet. As a co-enzyme, it assists in the making of fatty acids, in nucleic acid synthesis and in the oxidation of fatty acids and carbohydrates. Without biotin, the body’s fat production is impaired. It also aids in the utilisation of protein, folic acid, pantothenic acid and vitamin B12.
Biotin is an essential nutrient that appears in trace amounts in all animal and plant tissue. Some rich sources are brewer’s yeast, pork, lamb, liver, royal jelly, unpolished rice, whole grains, nuts, egg yolk, sardines, soybeans, lentils, cauliflower and mushrooms.
Biotin is synthesised by intestinal bacteria. Some of the vitamin is absorbed in the intestines, but much is excreted in the urine. It is stored mainly in the liver, kidney, brain and adrenal glands. Antibiotics interfere with the production of the intestinal bacteria from which it is produced.
