The sphygmomanometer is a device used to measure blood pressure. The set comprises of an inflatable cuff to restrict blood flow and a mechanical monometer to measure the pressure. To get an accurate reading the sphygmomanometer should be used in conjunction with a means to determine at what pressure blood flow is just starting, and at what pressure it is unimpeded. Manual sphygmomanometers are used in conjunction with a stethoscope. We have included a medical standard stethoscope with this set to enable accurate readings and measurements. To ensure you take an accurate reading you must ensure the cuff is placed smoothly and snugly around an upper arm, at roughly the same vertical height as the heart while the subject is seated with the arm supported. Monitoring blood pressure over a period of time at home can be used to provide your doctor or nurse with more information about how well your treatment is working and how you respond to medications. Home blood pressure monitoring can also be useful for people who have high blood pressure and who are taking medications as it can mean that you are able to cut down on the number of visits to your surgery for checks.
