Lemon & peppermint - origin and history: The lemon tree is a small evergreen with serrated and intensely fragrant leaves. At the beginning the fruit is green but it becomes yellow as it ripens. Lemons were the first citrus fruit that mankind disseminated in a westerly direction. Alexander the Great brought the tree back with him following his expeditions in Asia Minor. Portuguese explorers stumbled across lemons on their way to India in East Africa in the gardens of Arab traders and brought them with them to their homeland. Today they grow wild in the entire Mediterranean region and are cultivated in North and South America. The essential oil is found exclusively in the peel, from where it is extracted using a cold-pressing procedure.Just breathing in its fresh fragrances enlivens the senses. The peppermint plant comes originally from China but these days is often found on our balconies and in our gardens. It is a perennial plant which spreads surprisingly rapidly. We drink the tea hot and cold and also use the leaves to season food. Its minty taste freshens up chewing gum and toothpaste too. The name mint is derived from the nymph Minthe. The remains of mint have been found in Egyptian burial chambers from the year 1000 BC. Details:
