Vitamin D helps to build strong bones and healthy teeth. Commonly known as the sunshine vitamin, Vitamin D is synthesized in the skin following exposure to sunlight. Most healthy adults should be able to get enough Vitamin D from being outside in the sun, unfortunately in the UK in the winter there isn’t much opportunity to get a daily dose of sunshine! The Food Standards Agency recommends that if you are pregnant or breastfeeding you should take a 400iu/ 10µg supplement of Vitamin D each day. Older people should also consider taking 400iu/10µg of Vitamin D each day. Others who may be at risk from Vitamin D deficiency include people who: • are of Asian origin • rarely get outdoors • eat no meat or oily fish Also available as high-strength Vitamin D3 5000iu. If you aren't getting enough Vitamin D, you might be more at risk of some of the harmful effects of too much Vitamin A.
