Vitamin B2 or Riboflavin is a water soluble vitamin. It earnt its name come from its chemical structure, “ribo” from the sugar ribose and “flavin” from the ring shape that give Riboflavin is characteristiced by its yellow colour. Mistakes were made from discovery in the late 19th century as they believed B2 was connected to B1, and didn’t exist on its own. It wasn’t until the 1930s that this was discovered as false.
Dietary sources of Vitamin B2 include milk, fortified cereals, yeast, organ meats, oily fish, mushrooms, kale, egg yolks, and cashew nuts. Normal dietary intake is approximately 1.5-2mg/day, but a supplement can provide up to 10-200mg/day.
The role of Vitamin B2 is to promote normal energy metabolism and function of normal nervous system. Riboflavin maintains the health of the body by acting as an antioxidant.
